ABOUT THE COURSE
James Knight’s Gentle Somatic Yoga® is considered a journey of self-discovery through embodied exploration. As the practice of yoga continues to expand into the mainstream (fitness vs. wellness), people are searching for gentler, kinder, and more nourishing ways to move.
In this all-day intensive workshop the emphasis will not be on stretching muscles. Instead, we will be reprogramming them through a method known as pandiculation. This method goes to the root cause of all muscular pain by empowering brain-to-muscle re-connection.
This interactive and experiential workshop will cover the history, neuroscience, methodology, and philosophy of Gentle Somatic Yoga. It is the perfect introductory course for yoga teachers/therapists, bodyworkers, movement educators, as well as the lay person. You will learn practical and effective skills that you can immediately incorporate into your classes and/or private practice.
Participants will have a direct Somatic experience, resulting in enhanced neurocircuitry (i.e. brain-to-muscle reprogramming) by coming out of Sensory Motor Amnesia (see Keys to Overcoming Chronic Tension and Pain section below) and into Somatic Awakening. This embodied experience will not only help participants, but also can be shared with their family members, friends, clients and students.
What You Will Learn
As a result of this workshop, teachers, therapists, movement educators, yoga practitioners, and the lay person will:
- Learn a minimum of 10 corrective and therapeutic exercises, called Somatic Movement Flows® that they can immediately integrate into classes and/or private practices.
- Expand their skill set for specialty populations such as: corporate wellness, people recovering from injury, athletes that want to improve their performance, patients pre- or post-surgery, active seniors, beginning yoga students, and more.
- Discover why the technique of pandiculation is more effective than stretching a muscle leading to long-lasting results for people suffering from chronic pain and stiffness.
- Rebuild neuropathways from the brain to muscle that will significantly increase flexibility, strength, and coordination.
- Explore and embody the effects from techniques that will permanently erase tension-based patterns and other habits of holding stress in the body (soma).

Keys to Overcoming Chronic Tension and Pain
Sensory Motor Amnesia happens when the brain has lost the ability to relax tight, contracted muscles. This is the root cause of most chronic muscular tension and pain. When the brain forgets how to relax muscles, the muscles stay contracted and we feel muscular pain even when we think we are “relaxing”.
Learn how to retrain the brain to notice (sense/sensory) how you move – or don’t move. Through self-awareness you are able to feel and connect with chronically tight or frozen muscles and help them learn how to relax.
The customizable therapeutic Somatic Movement Flows® that James developed can help relieve chronic back, neck, shoulder, hip, knee, and foot pain. These Flows significantly increase flexibility, support recovery from injury, and also prevent injuries arising from repetitive movements of everyday life.
The aim of Gentle Somatic Yoga is to educate people and empower participants with practical tools so they can take charge of their own healing process and give them valuable self-care tools for enhanced performance and well-being.
This course qualifies for 6.5 contact hour CEUs with Yoga Alliance.
