How Gentle Somatic Yoga® Works With the Energy Body

The practice of self-care is constant, especially considering the seemingly endless amounts of life challenges that can drain your energy.  I, for one, can feel my energy drain when reading headlines in the news or when I think about the current political turmoil.  That’s why I felt inspired to record and share a new video that supports you to invigorate your energy body, no matter what is going on in the outside world.

In the video, I share a Somatic Movement Flow called Namaste Flow. It is considered pranayama (a breathing technique to increase life force energy) paired with movement.  It’s simple yet powerful!

Last week we talked about how Gentle Somatic Yoga®(GSY) can help get relief from the pain and inflammation caused by autoimmune diseases.  In that blog, we also referred to the Prana (life force or energy) and how that energy can get blocked when the body is in pain.

In this week’s blog post, we’re diving deeper around the topic of Prana and how keeping the energy flow balanced is one of the key components to GSY and Somatic Movement Flows.

Somatic Movement Flows® and the Energy Body

Prana comes from the Sanskrit word for vital life force or breath. Making sure your prana stays balanced is key to your overall health and wellbeing.

Many things can cause your Prana to be out of balance, including many of the outside influences such as diet, negative thinking and an unhealthy lifestyle.

Here are 10 signs are a great way to know that your Prana energy is out of balance:

  1. Extreme fatigue, exhaustion and tiredness
  2. Feeling depressed or stuck in a rut and unable to make the changes we want in life
  3. Having repetitive negative or destructive thoughts
  4. Lacking in motivation and zest for life
  5. Reacting very emotionally to anything we perceive as negative
  6. Headaches, dizziness and general aches and pains
  7. Illnesses such as colds, allergies and immune disorders or other chronic illnesses
  8. Feeling stressed and anxious
  9. Digestive issues such as constipation and diarrhea
  10. Sexual problems such as a lack of, or excessive libido (https://www.learning-mind.com)

Practicing the GSY Somatic Movement Flows, such as Namaste Flow, regularly supports returning the body back to a balanced state called Homeostasis.

The Dictionary defines homeostasis as “the tendency toward a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, especially as maintained by physiological processes.”

Simply meaning, the living organism of the body is working the way that it designed to be in an optimal state.

Signs of Prana being in balance (homeostasis):

  1. Feeling strong, healthy, and full of energy
  2. Experiencing a sense of peace and wellbeing
  3. Being compassionate and empathetic
  4. Having intuition
  5. Being confident
  6. Feeling creative and inspired
  7. Having positive and loving feelings towards ourselves and others
  8. Feeling at one with the universe (https://www.learning-mind.com/)

So how does Somatic Movement Flows balance the Prana and keep the body in a homeostatic state?

Repeating a short bit from above, when the body is in pain muscles tense out of a subconscious reflex to protect itself. Also, when those muscle groups fatigue then it is natural that other muscles near that part of the body get recruited to keep the body stable. This, in turn, causes pain in other parts of the body and causes further imbalances in posture and energy.

The method of Gentle Somatic Yoga (GSY) re-patterns muscle groups and the nervous system. When practicing the main technique in GSY, called pandiculation, muscles are reset to their optimal length in a resting position.

When the body doesn’t feel threatened by pain, the energy is freed up and flows more easily through the body.  This allows the Prana to do what it is designed to do: heal the body’s imbalances and to keep it strong and vital.
